Managing Editor - Model D

Model D is looking for a new editor!

Are you passionate about the future of Detroit? Do you live and breathe Detroit news, culture, development, neighborhoods, politics and history? 

Then you might be our next editor for Model D, Issue Media Group’s flagship publication. 

We're looking for a smart editor with a strong understanding of Detroit's neighborhoods, its history and culture, the places that make it special, and the people and projects that are moving the city forward.

The managing editor wears many hats, they direct the publication's coverage of neighborhood development, innovation, talent, and transformation in Detroit. Model D is published by Issue Media Group, a national network of local publications dedicated to telling the story of people changing cities.

The ideal candidate will have several years of experience writing and editing high-quality magazine-style features, demonstrated experience in online journalism and social media, and an interest in urban and social issues, economic development, innovation, and technology. 

This candidate will also bring a willingness to learn and experiment, a collaborative spirit, a knack for spotting emerging urban trends, and a strong set of connections to thought leaders and creative talent. Candidates must be based in Detroit and should have a good grasp of its neighborhoods.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drive the editorial vision and mission

  • Manage the publication's weekly editorial calendar

  • Lead regular editorial meetings with the Model D team

  • Recruit, hire and develop a diverse base of freelance talent

  • Develop and assign feature stories and identify news leads

  • Manage the publication's audience engagement and growth strategy

  • Collaboratively set and pursue publication growth and improvement goals

  • Upload content to Model D CMS and assemble, test, & launch a regular newsletter

  • Assist in oversight of Model D special projects as applicable (underwriting series, special reports, etc.)

  • Regularly contribute content to the publication

  • Manage the publication's monthly budget

  • Work with the publisher to ensure underwritten program deliverables are met

  • Collaborate with local publisher to provide editorial direction on new programs
