DevOps Software Engineer

About the team and technology:

You'll join a small team of devops & infrastructure engineers, distributed across New York and Nairobi. You'll have frequent interaction with other engineering teams and anybody at the company from data scientists to product managers. 

Our stack is evolving but we use: 

  • Cloud based relational Postgres & NoSQL databases

  • A graph database

  • Redis for caching

  • Javascript on the front end and Python on the backend

  • Ansible, AWS, GCP

  • Docker & kubernetes

  • GSuite for collaboration and authentication

What You'll Do:

  • Speed up and streamline release process

  • Sizing and capacity planning of a large, sharded database

  • Creating our user analytics backend

  • Building an ML ops pipeline to allow our data scientists to focus on models

  • Designing and implementing access control to our infrastructure in a frictionless way

  • Designing the next generation of our data ingestion pipeline

  • Design DevOps solutions for large and medium scale projects. This includes selection and review of technology frameworks/architecture to be used on projects. Create architecture documents and diagrams.

  • Design and implement CI/CD pipelines that are highly available, scalable, and self-healing on a cloud platform.

  • Define and deploy monitoring, metrics, and logging systems.

  • Design and document efficient DevOps operational practices. 

  • Identify shortcomings in existing DevOps environments or designs and implement improvements.

  • Automate workloads in cloud and cloud native approaches.

What We're Looking For:

The ideal candidate will have along with at least 3 years of experience working with a diverse set of challenges from a complex system, be able to identify effective solutions and communicate them to the team. We're looking for a candidate with deep understanding and technical knowledge and also someone who can apply this knowledge to building our long term goal of becoming the go-to platform for agricultural data. You can troubleshoot a Linux performance issue as well as you can invent a new solution. You can identify areas of improvement but you're practical about creating proof of concepts and have data to back up your ideas.

  • At least 3 years of relevant experience using and managing DevOps tooling, monitoring, infrastructure-as-code and automation tools.

  • Experience using cloud solutions such AWS, GCP or Azure.

  • Strong scripting and software development experience, including Bash, Python, PowerShell, TypeScript and JavaScript. 

  • Experience working with containers and associated technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.

  • Linux System Administration.

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

  • The ability and skill to train other people in procedural and technical topics.
